MONITOR(1M)  —  HP-UX

Series 300/800 Only

NAME

monitor − display system performance statistics

SYNOPSIS

/usr/contrib/bin/monitor

DESCRIPTION

The monitor is an unsupported program that allows one to observe how the HP-UX operating system is being used.  It shows data in each major area (processes, memory, I/O, and networking) of the system.  The monitor can be used to determine why your system is running slowly, how to tune an application by observing the system behavior when that application is running, or to learn more about how the HP-UX operating system works.

The monitor stores it’s help information in the /usr/contrib/lib/monitor.help file.  Further information about the monitor should be obtained by running monitor and typing "?" to enter the main help screen.

The monitor reads the /etc/monitor_data file when starting up to retrieve symbol table data information that it previously read from /hp-ux and device file information obtained from the /dev directory.  The monitor re-builds this file when necessary.

The monitor uses the TERM environment variable to determine the terminal characteristics.  It determines the escape sequences to home and clear the screen.  It then updates the contents of the screen by positioning the cursor with RETURN, LINEFEED and TAB characters and then updating changed characters in groups of 8 characters beginning at each tab stop.  Thus, it requires tab stops to be set every 8 characters and for the tab characters to space over unchanged areas without changing the text.  The monitor turns off tab expansion to accomplish this.  If one uses the monitor over some remote terminal facility that does not pass along the TCSETA ioctl that the monitor issues to turn off tab expansion, then monitor screen updates may not be correctly done.  Commands such as cu and rlogin handle this correctly.
