NAME

wc − word count

SYNOPSIS

wc [ options ] [ name ...  ]

DESCRIPTION

Wc counts lines, words and characters in the named files, or in the standard input if no filename is specified.  A word is a maximal string of characters delimited by spaces, tabs or newlines. 

OPTIONS

−c Counts only the number of characters. 

−l Counts only the number of lines. 

−w Counts only the number of words.
