Alternate screen key
Switch between the MicroVMS windowing system and a custom application that
uses the device driver's QIO interface as follows:
o Press the F3 key.
Color display setup
The "Color display setup" menu allows you to tailor the standard colors on
your workstation to your own taste. The "Color display setup" menu can be
reached via the "Workstation Setup" menu (see Setting_things_up).
o Select a color option ("Window background" for example). A box
showing the current value of that color will appear. On Color systems,
bars labeled "Red", "Green", and "Blue" will be displayed. On a
Monochrome or Intensity system, a single "Intensity" bar appears.
o Move the arrow on each of the bars to adjust the amount of red, green,
and blue (or grey) in that color. If you want to adjust another color,
select a new color option from the "Color display setup" menu.
o You MUST select the "Update color map" option after you have adjusted
the colors to your preference. If you exit the "Color setup" without
updating the color map, your changes will be lost.
o On Monochrome systems, the cursor colors cannot be adjusted, and
the only intensities selectable are white and black. A grey striped
pattern is also available on the display background.
Creating windows
Create VT220 or TEK4014 emulation windows as follows:
o Activate the "Workstation Options" menu and select either the
"Create new VT220 window" or "Create new TEK4014 window" item.
(See Window_options for further details.)
o If there are no other VT220 or TEK4014 windows on the workstation
screen, the "Username:" prompt will be displayed in the window.
You can now log into the system.
o If there is a VT220 or TEK4014 window already displayed, and
"Automatic login" is enabled (see Setting_things_up for futher
details) you will be logged into the system as soon as the new
window is created.
Cycle windows key
Cycle through all windows to which the keyboard can be attached, bringing
each window to the foreground of the display and attaching the keyboard
to it, as follows:
o Press the F5 key on the keyboard as many times as is neccessary to
bring the desired window to the foreground of the display.
(NOTE: F5 is also used as the "Reset_color_maps" key)
Cycleable windows will generally be distinguished by a KB indicator in the
upper right hand corner of their banners.
Deleting windows
Most windows can be removed from the screen as follows:
o Activate the "Window Options" menu of the window to delete and select
the "Delete" item. (See Window_options for further details.)
Windows can also be deleted by exiting the application that created them.
For VT220 and TEK4014 emulation windows that you created with the
"Workstation Options" menu, this is accomplished by typing LOGOUT.
Disabled choices
Items in some workstation menus may be disabled by the system or by applications. These choices are displayed using grey characters and cannot be highlighted or selected.

"Workstation Options" menu as follows:
o Press the F1 key on the keyboard once to suspend screen activity
and a second time to resume screen activity.
Icon management
Icons are a convenient way to represent windows that you are not currently
using. To replace a window with an icon:
o Activate the "Window Options" menu of the window and select
the "Shrink to icon" item. (See Window_options for further details.)
To pop or move an icon:
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to the border of the icon.
o Pop or move the icon as appropriate. (See Moving_windows or
Popping_windows for further details.)
To replace an icon with the original window:
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to any point inside of the icon.
o Click the leftmost button on the mouse.
Keyboard ownership
The window that the keyboard is currently associated with is marked with
a highlighted KB indicator on the right side of its banner. Other windows
that the keyboard can be switched to are marked with non-highlighted KB
indicators. Associate the keyboard with one of these windows as follows:
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to the banner or border of the
target window. (If the banner is not visible, see Cycling_windows.)
o Click the leftmost button on the mouse.
Note, this mechanism will also pop the window.
Many types of windows, such as VT220 and TEK4014 emulation windows allow
you to associate the keyboard with the window by positioning the pointer
anywhere in the window.
Moving windows
Move a window as follows:
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to the banner or border of the
window to move.
o Press and hold down the leftmost button on the mouse. The window
will disappear and be replaced by an outline rectangle.
o Use the mouse to move the rectangle to the new window position.
o Release the leftmost button on the mouse.
Operator window key
View and then hide the operator window (OPA0:) as follows:
o Press the F2 key on the keyboard once to view the operator window
and a second time to hide it.
You cannot type into this window while the workstation windowing system
is active.
Popping windows
Bring a window to the foreground of the display as follows:
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to the banner or border of the
window to pop. (If the banner is not visible, see Cycling_windows.)
o Click the leftmost button on the mouse.
(Note, this mechanism will also associate the keyboard with the
window, if appropriate.)
OR
o Activate the "Window Options" menu of the window to pop and select
the "Pop in front" item. (See Window_options for further details).
Many types of windows, such as VT220 and TEK4014 emulation windows allow
you to pop the window by positioning the pointer anywhere in the window.
Printing the screen
Print a rectangular portion of the screen as follows:
o Activate the "Workstation Options" menu and select the "Print (portion
of) screen" item. (See Workstation_options for further details).
The pattern representing the pointer will change to an arrowhead.
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to the upper left hand corner of
the rectangulular area that you want to print.
o HOLD DOWN the leftmost button on the mouse.
o Move the mouse to create a box around the area to print.
o Release the leftmost button on the mouse. The pointer will
change to an hourglass while the workstation is printing.
The printer output will be directed to the destination defined in the
"Workstation setup". See Setting_things_up for further details.
Pushing windows
Move a window to the background of the display as follows:
o Activate the "Window Options" menu of the window to push and select
the "Push behind" item. (See Window_options for further details).
Reset color maps key
You can use this key to return the display to a usable state in the
event that applications' use of the HW colormap causes some windows to
"disappear", or become unusable.
To restore the color map entries for the screen background, the window
foreground and background, and the cursor, do the following:
o Press the F5 key on the keyboard
(NOTE: F5 is also used as the "Cycle_windows" key)
After doing this, you may want to click on the banner or border of a
particular window to restore that window's colors.
Resizing windows
Most windows can be resized as follows:
o Activate the "Window Options" menu of the window to resize and select
the "Change the size" item. (See Window_options for further details).
A flashing outline will appear along the border of the window and
the pattern representing the pointer will change to new arrow.
o Use the mouse to move the pointer to a side or corner of the outline.
o Press and hold down the leftmost button on the mouse.
o Use the mouse to move the outline into or outside of the window.
o Release the leftmost button on the mouse.
Windows can also be resized under application control. For VT220 and TEK4014
emulation windows that you created with the "Workstation Options" menu, this
is accomplished by using the SET TERMINAL/WIDTH=width/PAGE=height command.
Restoring display
To prevent screen damage, if neither the keyboard nor the mouse have been
used in the last 15 minutes, the screen display will go off. Restore the
display as follows:
o Press any key or move the mouse.
Note, you can control the amount of time it takes before the screen is
blanked by using the workstation setup facility. (See Setting_things_up
for further details).
Setting things up
Tailor workstation attributes to your taste as follows:
o Activate the "Workstation Options" menu and select the "Setup the
workstation" item. (See Workstation_options for further details).
The "Workstation Setup" menu will appear.
o Select the setup item you wish to examine or modify from the upper
section of setup options. A titled setup subwindow will appear.
o Modify the attribute(s) described by the subwindow by pointing at
the appropriate spot in the subwindow and clicking the mouse. The
attribute will remain as you specify until you turn off the machine.
o Delete the subwindow by either reselecting the item that activated
it or by selecting another item.
o Save your tailored attributes so that they can automatically be
restored next time you turn on the workstation by selecting the
"Save current settings" item.
o To reset the workstation-supplied default values after you have
altered the setup, select the "Use default settings" item.
o Restore your saved attributes while the machine is still running
by selecting the "Restore last saved settings" item.
