ddformat(1A)  —  MISC REFERENCE MANUAL PAGES

NAME

ddformat − SCSI disk format

SYNOPSIS

ddformat device

DESCRIPTION

The ddformat command issues a Format command to the specified SCSI disk drive, and the loss of all stored data can be expected.  Otherwise, the effect is dependent on the drive manufacturer.  The Command Descriptor Block is:

0x04 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00

Quantum ProDrive (tm) Series drives are factory-formatted only, so the ddformat command completes immediately.  The list of defective blocks, detected at the factory and during use, remains unchanged, but is reordered for efficiency.
