NAME

haltsys − Recommended method for shutting your system downquickly

SYNOPSIS

/sbin/haltsys

DESCRIPTION

The haltsys command provides a quick method for bringing your system down.  It performs the following tasks before stopping the system:

syncs the system
unmounts all local filesystems (if it can)
syncs the system again
runs uadmin 2 0

You must be root to run haltsys. haltsys returns an error message and stops processing if it tries to umount a local filesystem that is busy (someone is still using it, or just cd‘d into it).  You need to be certain that you aren’t still using your locally mounted filesystems before running haltsys.

An advantage to haltsys (over BSD’s fasthalt) is that you are guaranteed of haltsys being on the core release.  If you choose not to install the BSD utilities, you do not have the BSD fasthalt command on your system.
