settimezone(1M) settimezone(1M)
NAME settimezone - sets the local time zone SYNOPSIS settimezone DESCRIPTION settimezone sets the time zone for an A/UX system relative to Universal Coordinated Time (also known as Greenwich mean time). The use of one time standard helps enable the correct synchronization of time-sensitive operations across multiple UNIX(Reg.) systems in widely separated geographic locations. The settimezone program establishes how to compute local time based on Universal Coordinated Time by updating several files: It establishes /etc/localtime as a link pointing to a location-specific, binary-format file in /etc/zoneinfo and it writes a displayable string into /etc/TIMEZONE. The /etc/TIMEZONE file can be displayed easily with commands such as cat because it is in ASCII format. The settimezone command is interactive, prompting you for a letter corresponding to a country or time zone area at several junctures. Changes take effect the next time you log in. You must have root privileges to run this command. If your country or time zone area is not listed among the choices, choose Other and then enter your GMT bias as described in ``Customizing Your System'' in A/UX Local System Administration. The A/UX system clock maintains Greenwich mean time. Applications use time-zone information files to calculate the local time, and for this reason the system must know the local time zone. To obtain the correct local time, settimezone links the proper time zone information file to /etc/zoneinfo/localtime and changes the contents of the file /etc/TIMEZONE, which is used to set the TZ environment variable.
